My Rating: 3 ½ stars
I recently finished Warrior by Bryan Davis, the sequel to Starlighter in the series Dragons of Starlight. As I’ve said before, I’ve never been one for a “dragon tale” so this was quite new to me. It’s been a nice change from my normal favorites: fairies and ghosts. Though I may never pick up another dragon-themed book again, I hold nothing against this series or this author. I quite frankly love this series and can’t wait to finish it off with Divinier (Once the library gets it in).
All good novels come with surprises. Authors know that the only way to keep a reader reading is by adding shocking details or twists. I know that I’ve put down books before I even finished the first chapter. Okay, it’s only happened once and no, I will not tell you what book, because I loved all her other works. Like they say about Photography, you must take a hundred shots to get that perfect one; however, with authors, we should hope they have better odds.
Usually I’m dying to tell someone about my latest read and though I really loved this book, I don’t have the yearning to talk about it. Maybe it’s an example of “you just have to experience it for yourself” kind of book? So I’d normally add in my own summary, but this time I’m going to change things up and just give you the synopsis from the back cover (otherwise known as the product description):
“The Dragon Prince Has Hatched In book two of the Dragons of Starlight series, the stakes are raised when the foretold prince is crowned. While Koren and Jason race to the Northlands of Starlight to find the one person who can help them free the human slaves, Elyssa and Wallace strive to convince the captives that freedom is possible. Soon, all four discover that the secrets of Starlight extend much further than they had imagined. Meanwhile, Randall and Tybalt have returned to Major Four and struggle against the dragon Magnar, who has arrived to manipulate the governor. No one knows how the prophecy will be fulfilled, but one thing is clear: more than ever, the survival of the dragons depends on humankind, and they will do anything to prevent the slaves from escaping.”
As anyone, I have my favorite parts of books and they are usually things other people would overlook. The simplest little things capture me, and really show a lot about an author. If I recognize the seemingly unimportant details and enjoy it and also like the impression it leaves, than that signifies a worthy author. My favorite parts of this book and the ones I remember the most are the following: After Elyssa and Wallace rescue the cattle children and they build shelters, it starts to rain. Elyssa doesn’t go out to dance in the rain with Wallace and the children; rather she stays in the shelter and falls asleep. When she wakes up from her dream she decides to set out and find Jason. And now we come to my favorite part: her sweet goodbye to Wallace, to whom she’s become very close. The other part that captured my attention and intrigued me was while Jason was in the Northlands, in the White Dragon’s home. The spirits were whisping around him, some even talking. The most memorable of the spirits were the girls that appeared and helped Jason, like Resolute, the one that helped him cross the moat.
This is not my typical review, as you already know, I wish for you to experience it yourself. This is just one of those cases when I can’t even describe the events, let alone in a creative witty fashion. I’m very serious though, I didn’t even corner my mother and make her listen to my play-by-play, which I do after almost every book I read! Again, my lack of adequate description is not meant to be offensive towards the series or author.
Even if dragon books aren’t your “cup of tea”, I urge you to give the Dragons of Starlight series a try.
Do you find it weird that I can’t seem to find the right words to describe and summarize this novel? Are dragon themed books your favs or are you a fairies and ghosts person like me?
