Author of the Week: Jenny Han

Writer and chocolate cake lover, Jenny Han, was born and raised in Richmond Virginia.  On her path to becoming the talented YA author she is known as today, she studied at University of North Carolina and graduate school in New York.  At said graduate school, Han received a MFA in Writing for Children.  She now resides in Brooklyn where she has a part-time job working at a school library.

Visiting her website I was pleasantly surprised at the creativity of the site design—so cute!  Normally authors have “right to the point” cites that aren’t visually appealing.  Just from looking over the home page I can already tell that Han is girly and quirky.  Once you click to view her bio (Yes I will include the link) she lists her basic information (summarized above) like her education and current whereabouts.  Also listed are interesting facts about her that authors don’t usually include in their bios, which I find delightfully unexpected.

Some of those facts include:
·         Favorite fictional father: Atticus Finch
·         Favorite article of clothing: knee socks
·         Favorite time of day: 8:00pm
·         If I was a beverage, I would be cherry lemonade.

Sometimes it’s refreshing to get more than just a “where they are now” written on the inside flap of books.  Knowing the random things can help you better understand the authors writing style and can also help an aspiring young author appreciate their own unique voice.
